WVU Medicine is seeking a Regional Medical Director for our Emergency Medicine Division Northern operations.

Job Description Overview:The Regional Medical Director (RMD) will plan and direct all aspects of WVU EM policies and programs within the region. The RMD will be responsible for strategic clinical relationships with hospital administration, site medical directors, and providers within the region and ensure all clinical sites within the regional comply with WVU Emergency Medicine/SMG Policies. The candidate should have extensive leadership experience and demonstrate the ability to plan and execute goals as set forth by WVU Emergency Medicine/SMG. The candidate will perform a variety of complex tasks as well as lead and direct the work of other physicians, PA/NPs, and other administrative and clinical staff as outlined below. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is required. Additional information:Qualified candidates must be board eligible or board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Board of Osteopathic Emergency MedicineThe Regional Medical Director will oversee several locations in Northern, WV including large community emergency departments and critical access facilities. Emergency department locations volume range from 5,400 to 44,000 patient visits per year and are currently located in Uniontown, PA, Barnesville OH, Cadiz, OH, and Wheeling, Glen Dale, and New Martinsville, WV.WVU Medicine/ System Medical Group is a dynamic organization with the goal to provide high-quality care to the citizens of West Virginia and surrounding regions, backed by a tertiary-care academic medical center. We are a rapidly expanding group with an emphasis on physician looking to grow our leadership team.Purpose of the PositionThe Regional Medical Director:

1. Provides leadership, education, research, planning, organization, staffing, coordination, and evaluation of (insert region) emergency department activities.2. Acts as liaison with departmental, educational, scholarship, research, hospital administration, and medical staff.3. Excels in the following areas:
  • Providing leadership and management for the emergency departments.
  • Working cooperatively and supportively with the members of the medical staff to provide emergency services for all patients who present to the emergency departments.
  • Working cooperatively and supportively with local hospital departments to ensure availability, quality, and effective use of services.
  • Monitoring regional needs and providing input into local and regional EMS system and disaster planning.
QualificationsThe following skills and experience are appropriate for the director of an emergency department.

1. Career emergency medicine physician with clinical and leadership skills.2. Board certified in emergency medicine.3. Demonstrated interest, knowledge and ability in the leadership, financial, managerial, and marketing aspects of emergency medicine.4. Meets and maintains State Licensure and credentialing requirements.5. Demonstrates ability to speak effectively on administrative and clinical matters related to emergency medicine. Appropriately focuses on the audience, whether administrators, medical staff members, EMS providers, or the lay public.ReportingThe Regional EM Medical Director will report directly to the Vice-Chair of Community Emergency Medicine or their designee.ResponsibilitiesA. Regional Management
  • Promotes and participates in a collaborative, interdisciplinary ED leadership team at their regional sites.
  • Assists site directors with scheduling and coordinates coverage of open ED Physician and APP shifts.
  • Addresses all patient, staff, and medical staff issues and complaints in compliance with the processes in place at regional hospitals, when these are unable to be addressed by the local medical director.
  • Assists with recruiting and oversees Physicians and APPs as necessary to staff the Regional EDs. This includes helping to ensure that all evaluations, credentialing, and other forms are completed and signed in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with local ED Leadership teams to ensure that departmental performance meets or exceeds standards described in medical staff rules and regulations, the hospital bylaws, departmental policies, the JCAHO Manual of Accreditation, and in other appropriate local and national standards.
  • Works with local ED leadership teams to ensure that the department meets or exceeds its defined objectives for improvement, growth, and expansion of services.
  • In conjunction with the ED leadership teams, helps build enthusiasm, stability, teamwork, and competence among employees through supervision, individualized evaluation and counseling, training, and praise.
  • Helps to ensure that departmental policies are known, understood, and implemented by the
  • emergency physicians and APPs.
  • Together with local ED leadership, helps ensure adequacy of EMS communications and physician EMS command.
  • Is accessible during usual business hours for routine business.
  • Serves (or delegates a designee to serve) on state, regional, departmental and hospital committees as assigned by the Vice Chair, and/or Hospital Administrator/CEO
  • Is responsible for assisting with local departmental peer review process as needed.
  • Performs and/or assists with process implementation as assigned by the Chair, Vice Chair, and/or Hospital CEO/Administrator
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chair, Vice-Chair, and/or Administrator
  • Reviews monthly hours reports to department administration
  • Provides appropriate input into compensation and incentives
  • Is available for counseling, advice, information, and general support to the physicians and other department members.
  • Reinforces mentorship of APPs
  • Performs duties as above in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Monitors quality data and dashboards and identifies opportunities/plans for improvement.
B. Education
  • Participates in continuing education of physicians, APPs, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, and other ED personnel.
  • Encourages the involvement of all physician staff to participate in prehospitaltraining and education.
  • Encourages an outreach program to the community, media, and industry on topics of interest in the area of emergency medicine and promotes the regional hospitals medical capabilities.
C. LiaisonTakes steps to ensure good communication with the following individuals and groups:
  • Patients and their families
  • Local Emergency Departmental Medical Directors and Administration
  • Local Hospital Administration
  • Other Local Hospital departments
  • Industry (local and regional employers)
  • Civic groups
  • City/county government in cooperation with hospital administration
  • Paramedic and EMS system
D. Effort Expectations
  • At least 67 hours per month of Administrative Effort
  • Routine visits to all regional sites
  • Quarterly meetings with Hospital CEOs or designees
  • Weekly to Monthly meetings with Vice Chair, or designee
  • Weekly to Monthly meetings with local medical directors
  • Attendance at Local ED Medical Staff Meetings
  • Routine Attendance of DEM Medical Director Meetings/Calls
  • Other committee service as deemed necessary.
